What role can digital professionals play in accelerating green transition?
That’s a question faced far and wide, as professionals increasingly pursue purpose and impact. The cutting-edge students at Hyper Island are no exception, which is why we continuously work with their students to investigate this important question.
Equipped to embrace complex challenges
Based on our framework for collaborative sense making, our virtual workshops have prompted students to build strategies for personal climate leadership at work, customer-centric sustainability, and public-private innovation partnerships alike.
When 20 teams of Hyper Islands technologists, designers and business developers were challenged by a major vehicle corporation to rethink for sustainability the value chain in goods freight, they quickly needed a way to understand a range of stakeholders.
Ideas are only as good as their understanding of stakeholders
We grabbed three main tools from the toolbox to equip the students for their mission. First, the value proposition lens, to help clarify how their ideas will add value to each stakeholder. Second, the behavioural design ideation kit to stress-test how on-the-ground users like drivers and operators would react to and adopt innovations. At last, the business model canvas was brought in to tie it all together.
For the students rethinking a vast and complex challenge, our finest duty was to invoke the agency and curiosity needed to embrace the value chain. That’s why we came with a suite of visual canvases, designed to help teams quickly process key insights and move to action.
Indeed, upon completing their challenge, the students described the experience in an evaluation survey as “inspiring” and “practical” with reference to the specific sustainability insights introduced. The program manager reflected that this was what helped the students embark on such a complex mission.
